My sleepy, sick pullet (see topic: Sleepy, Sick Pullet) has now developed a stiff neck that is turned down and back against her body as though she wants to stand on her head! The little pullet will let me give her water and electrolyte, but she is unable to move her head. Today, she could hardly walk. When she did so, she tried to balance herself with her wings, and leant against any near-by object for support. But now she seems to be paralysed as if she has had a stroke. Is that possible? Or does she have a strain of Marek's disease?

Phoebe

Hi Pheobe

It could be possible, albeit low, but possible that she has developed wry neck. Which is where the neck starts to fold backwards.

There is sometimes ways you can help fix/alleviate the problem, but I don't have the answers sorry, so it might be worth having a google.

Is there any chance you can take her to the vet?, as you really need to put her out of this misery she would be in.

If its Marek's then you need to do this fast as you really don't want that getting to any others.

Good Luck
Chicka-Dee

It can be caused by mareks or botulism but 9/10 it's a vitamin deficiency and particularly vitamin B. You can try vitamins direct to the hen and see in a few days

Hi Chicka-Dee,

Thank you for your suggestions about my pullet's wry neck.

There will be great rejoicing here if it proves not to be Marek's disease.

Hi Carol NZ,

It was a great relief to read your comments. The thought of Marek's disease spreading through my precious chooks was daunting, to say the least!

Since I have on hand some "Natrakelp" liquid seaweed for animals, which contains several vitamin Bs, I made up a poultry mix, and have fed small amounts to the pullet during today.

You will be pleased to know that the pullet responded swiftly. Tonight, when I put her to bed in the isolation pen, she sat normally with her head only slightly wry.

I am delighted. Many thanks Carol NZ.

Hi LooLoo,

Yes, the wry neck does seem to be nutritionally related, because the pullet is responding to liquid seaweed doses.

Meanwhile, I shall keep her warm and isolated from the other chooks.

Hi Phoebe,
It is interesting that your hen has responded to the nutrient supplement.
B vitamin deficiencies are extremely rare in seed/grain eating birds because these usually contain adequate levels of thiamine, B 12 etc.
However, certain medications such as coccidostats can impair absorption of B vitamins, as can other diseases which damage the gut.
Do you feed any pellets or just a grain-based diet to your birds?

Thats good news but not surprising I have seen this before and the same treatment worked very well for those people and their chooks and duck. Keep up the vitamins for around 14 days see how she goes gluck.gif
