I was recently given an older chookie to replace poor Lucy, recently taken by a fox.

She is riddled with worms and was infested with red mites, she is own her on in quarantine and since been wormed twice in two weeks with Avitrol Plus and dusted with Pestene and her coop washed out also with aviary disinfectant after the recommended period of worming.

Her poos still look disgusting and her bottom dirty, though now I don't feel like mites are crawling all over me when I pick her up.

Regarding the worms what would be the next step in treating her.

Thanking you in advance.

Her poo will take a week or 2 after worming to return to normal I would offer lots of greens and keep her in quarantine until she is pooing normal with no signs of castings

Thank you Loo Loo
Wormed my girls a few days ago my Harriet is felling better being more like herself after being treated with kilverm ( spelling may not be right with what I treated my flock with)

how many times a year and when should I worm the girls?

The frequency of worming depends on your situation- how heavy the contamination of worm eggs is in your environment, and the local weather conditions.

If the birds are confined to a small space where there is heavy contamination of worm eggs in moist conditions you will need to worm more often than if the birds free range in dry conditions.

In general birds are wormed 2-4 times a year ie every 3-6 months. The most critical time is approaching the breeding season and after the chicks are reared (if parent-raised).

Also a reminder to worm your chicks at around 6-8 weeks to protect them also
