My 18 month old RIR has intermittently been laying no-shell or soft-shelled eggs. Today I saw part of a very soft shell and yolk stuck to her back feathers, pulled it off then had a look at her vent - there was more of a very soft shell, with white and yolk gunk, sticking out her vent and I have pulled it out. Her vent seems more red and swollen than usual. Otherwise healthy, eating and drinking. Not noticed a poop yet. I can't take a photo as I'm here by myself during the day.

So, assuming the egg broke in her vent, there is likely more inside her. What shall I do? My husband will be home later to help out as needed. I understand this is very dangerous for her and love her dearly so any advice on how to proceed would be greatly appreciated.

You have to watch it for infection and if so get some antibiotics from your vet

Thanks. I have some Triple C antibiotic and have given her a dose of that. I saw a similar question on a US forum where it was suggested to give a 6ml enema in the vent, using a weak Betadine solution. I was thinking I'd do this when my husband gets home (one to hold her, one to do the deed!). What do you think of this idea? I have seen her do one small normal poop and she is currently dustbathing with her best buddy.

The Betadine is a good idea when this happens infection is VERY common so best to act ASAP

Bobkat

try rubbing your RIRs rear with ovil oil t help pass the rest of the soft egg or give her a warm rear end bath to do the same thing.

I lost 2 rhodes red hens to this or more so the infection it causes 99% of the time. Yep you need to get some board spectrum antibiotics a sap or it will get infected.

Good luck

Is this more so with the commercial laying hens than the pet breeds like australorps?

It's now the fifth day since I noticed this and she seems fine. I gave her two does of Triple C antibiotic and removed shell grit so she didn't consume any vitamins. Touch wood, she seems perfectly fine. I guess it may take a while to be sure she hasn't become infected. I wonder if those who have experienced this noticed how quickly it happens?

Cautiously optimistic, though

Its about 7-10 before the infection happened in mine but the vet said the weather made a difference especially if its hot. Good to read yours are fine now
