Hi everyone,
This is my first post. I've owned chickens for a month now.. I am worried about my girl, Argentina. She was meant to be at point of lay when I got her but her comb is paler than her friends and appears a bit damaged. She sat on the nest a bit but I don't think she lays, and maybe is old? Her fave is more feathery than her friend.

I figured she would get better being spoilt and free range in the garden but she has an odd mouth movement with her beak I recorded yesterday to show you.... (I'm worming her tonight just incase) but today I couldn't find her and found her hiding in some bushes and one of her eyes really swollen and she is doing a lot more of that rubbing her eye on her wing u can see in this video.. The video is here and her beak movement at 11sec was the first concern but I think they eye thing may be more worrying now. Any advice please, I do care for them a lot and just want her to be well.

Thanks in advance.
Leah

Hi Leah wave.gif

The mouth movement isn't odd. My girls often stretch out their mouths. It's just something chooks do. So don't worry about that.

Without being able to see a close up picture of her eye I am only taking a guess, but maybe she has something in it. Have you tried washing it out with saline? As maybe she got some dirt or something flicked in it.

It's not easy & I know all about having to contend with a bad eye problem in a chook, but if you catch it early then you have a better chance of getting her back to normal.

Give it a wash out with saline, see if you can see any reason for her rubbing it as she clearly is irritated by whatever is in there.

Post pics for us to see so we can try & give you a better idea.

Keep us posted.

Cheers
Chicka-Dee

Thank you chickadee!
I will do.. I'm new to handling them too and they aren't used to be handled.... Sneaking up at night might be my approach. I love watching them in the day they are so interesting.... Though Argentina has been sitting around a lot the last couple days..

Just picked her up off the perch and washed with saline. She was so good.
Here is a better close up. It was a bit watery/bubbly but looks like scratch in bottom lid rest of eye looked ok. http://imgur.com/crAwcIT
Thanks for your support!

Hi Leah

She has def had a good scratch happen. After you cleaned it did you see any abscess or puffy parts where something may be embedded in the eye?

Poor baby she def has an uphill battle on her/your hands.

Cheers

You should get some broad spectrum antibiotics as it could infect her sinus and give her an infection

Hi there, thanks for following up.

She is in isolation and I've been using Terramycin powder on her eye. I spoke to my local vet and showed her a pic too, who said keep it up but not good sign she was skinny. She is very light compared to my other Sussex, but still eating and was scratching in the garden when out.. I was a bit worried the other night as her other eye looked bubbly and was worried it was respiratory infection, hence isolation, but it looked ok last night and the original eye no worse, maybe a bit better.
I hope she doesn't mind isolation, the other chook wasn't being mean and was letting her eat.
Doing Terramycin powder for another 4 days then will review..... Mean time trying to fatten her up!

The terramycin should work if she has any respiratory issues also, I prefer oxytetracycline works very well
