Post subject:  Diatomaceous Earth (food grade)

I've read that diatomaceous earth (food grade), when given as a supplement i.e added to feed, improves the health and productivity of laying hens. I've also read that it makes a great dust bath that kills lice etc.
Who uses diatomaceous earth (food grade) for their chooks and have they noticed that it's been beneficial?
All well informed opinions on the pros and cons of using DE welcome.

DE is a wonderful supplement for humans and would be good for birds as well. It helps by cleansing the intestine walls, ridding the body of parasites e.g. Worms. Good to give to chickens just before the full moon.

Thanks Misty. How much do you give them and how often?

Why before a full moon?

Re the amount...you would have to look at directions for humans and reduce it accordingly.
Re before the full moon. Worms attach themselves to the wall of the intestine but just before the full moon each month they detach to have a party in the intestine and procreate...lay eggs etc. At that time I always give my chickens garlic which has the same effect really. I have been doing it for 20 years and never had a worm problem in any of my flocks.

Thanks very much for your informative reply Misty. than657

Garlic treatment sounds like a good thing to do.
Can you please tell me how to treat them with garlic?
