My chooks have picked up some sort of flea. It is not the usual red mite. It looks thinner and fast moving. I found them on a chook when holding her. They didn't get onto my shirt or arm like mites do.
I am going to try a dip with Maldison 50. I think the dip would be easier than trying to spray them.
What are your thoughts.
Where would these fleas have come from. I can't call them mites, they look different. I have never seen them before, ever.

They sound like possum fleas, the maldison will fix them up but do it again in 4 weeks to be sure

I dipped my chooks and the fleas have gone. It was a quick dip and splash onto the wings.
The possum can't get into the coup at night. Would they be dropped into the dirt?
The maldison dip has made some of my chooks sickly. They have lost a little bit of weight and are not well.
I will have to use something else next time. Any suggestions?

I got rid of the fleas, BUT it made some of my chooks sick. One died yesterday even though it was about 2 weeks ago. My rooster has lost weight and not putting it back on yet. He is a year old light Sussex. One white chook has discoloured feathers. I hope she will get her white look back again. She was crook but is getting better. I will never use Maldison 30 again. The smell on the perches and walls is still there a little bit.. Although there is a lot of ventilation, I am sorry I didn't put them into their old coup.
I have been her almost years and always have had possums around, but I have never had them drop fleas before.

I suggest that you try diatomaceous earth as a dust bath next time. It's a mechanical treatment for pests rather than a chemical one and you will not get the negative side affects that you got with the chemical treatment. DE is also organic! :)
