I am wondering if you guys can give me advise on what may be wrong with my sussex hens? All around 18 years old and they are all got lazy and don't walk much or lay eggs. Their bums are a little messy and the have trouble breathing maybe cause they are obese like me not sure?
Any feedback would be appreciated thank you..

Hi benbat [smilie=welcome.gif] to APF

So sorry to read about your girls. Its unfortunate but sussex are a commercial hen bred to lay 100's of eggs then die quickly at about 18 months old. They are used then as pet food as they are no good for pets ect.. so maybe you can do the same? do you have dogs or cats?

One of the experts will be able to tell you more about the breed I am sure.

Good luck

Sorry but this seems like a rather strange post to me.

An 18 month old Light Sussex doesn't seem that old to me. (I've just had a 6-7 year old die) She was laying up until a few weeks ago and was a great layer and a great mother, who hatched and raised quite a few broods (two in one season a few years ago). Light Sussex are a pure breed aren't they? I know mine was cause I bred her from two show quality Light Sussex. Isn't the aim of this forum to help people and their chooks, no matter what our preferences are? The rooster was aggressive as was his son, but after the third generation the aggression seemed to have lessened.

Benbatt, if they were having trouble breathing maybe they have a lung infection. Is their coop dusty or damp, or mouldy. If they have a lung issue then they will be lethargic as they won't be getting enough oxygen into their blood, which causes tiredness.
