Greetings

Fleck appeared to have developed a problem the last day or two – lethargic, walking like penguin and slightly off her food. Her vent was also constantly contracting in and out.

A bath in Epsom salts revealed a feeling of fullness in her abdomen when palpated. After 30 minutes I dried her off and applied 20 ml of bran oil into her vent (gently).

10 minutes later she released a rather long semi-fluid dropping.

I then noticed something sticking out of her vent. Recapturing Fleck I removed a 6 cm long piece of semi-hard shell. The shell, which was folded appeared to have been caught in her vent.

Hopefully this is the only problem.

Should I be concerned about the remainder of the shell (if there is any) and internal infection ??

Thanks, Chicken-girl

Greetings

Fleck became very lethargic and off her food so I took her to the VET. I was concerned that she may have the beginning symptoms of peritonitis - this occurs when an egg breaks and the yolk sinks into the abdominal cavity and slowly rots. The shell may or may not be discharged.

Good news is that everything appears OK. Fleck must have passed the yolk when the shell broke..

As for being off her food - it appears that Fleck may in pre-moult and it's not unusual for hens to go off their food at this time.

Observation only :)

Best, Chicken-Girl
