Hello Today I lost one of my five Australop chicks. there were no signs of it being ill the day before but early this morning I found it dead in the pen.
There were quite a few bloody droppings in the been, Firm not runny very dark in colour They had been given a different starter as I couldn't get the same one it was sold out.
None of the remaining four as yet are showing signs of illness or blood in droppings they are now in small holding cage on newspaper. They had been outside for a couple of days but locked up of night in their pen.
I've never had any sick poultry other then tick poisoning. HELP PLEASE
should I put the remaining chicks down I really don't want to as I looked long and hard for these chicks

Hi Silvermissy, from what you have described and with the presents of blood then its very like coccidiosis. We recommend you put them on a Sulpha based medication such as Sulphaquinn or similar A.S.A.P and treat ALL the chicks and any Adults that may have had contact.

For more info see this Topic

Thanks

Thanks i was am hoping it's not as it hasn't shown in any others yet. Will get some Sulphaquinn first thing Monday as everything is shut today.
Does it also affect ducks?
My khaki campbells have been hanging around their pen.
Thanks Adrienne

Hi Silvermissy, It can affect Ducks but it is VERY rare, we wouldn't worry about them. You may find it hard to buy Sulphaquin at the moment, most places have run out. If you can't get it, then use "Supha D" or similar, you should be able to buy that quite readily

Thanks

Hi thanks P.A I'm hoping because my area is not high in poultry breeders either for commercial or fanciers that one of the stockfeed, vets or petshop will still have some. so far no one else is sick and I'm making sure I have a good supply this time of my regular starter mix and don't have to buy different brand as these chicks are only about 4wks old and now I have to worry about the dozen light susses chicks as well because their from an old meat line.
I'll be vigilant about what brand I use from now on in.
Thanks so Much
