I have a pullet pekin, the other day we found her trapped under a overturned dish, she would have been under there for a day. Now her feathers are droopy and changed colour, she is quite thin , and Now one eye is shut. She is still eating and drinking, i have isolated her , but i really dont want to looze her, is there anything i can do to help her . i think she also has cocci, but i am treating all my chickens for that at the moment with sulph q. Please give me some advice, she was fine before this, except mild cocci that was being treated.

well ive just got home from work and my poor little pekin is actually worse, Yesterday she was eating small amounts and drinking on her own. Today nothing, she is a talker , and when im talking to her today , i get no response, one eye is still closed over. I took her out for a little cuddle , and possibly a goodbye, when i put her back in the bed weve made up for her, she fell on her side and didnt get back up, ive propped her back up now, but all is not good, IS IT TOO LATE, she was our favourite, not to mention weve lost two beautiful pekins now, and here on the gold coast we find it hard to get definite girls.

Hi Cammochick, Unfortunately doesn't sound good. I lost a chick over the weekend which I put down to too much rain and damp bedding, together with this chick being the runt of the batch and getting stressed whilst free roaming (it became trapped in my wired off garden area). Similar symptons except with nasal discharge and "rattly" breathing, as soon as I noticed I isolated the chick (inside on warm heat pad and light), but by that night it had died. On a previous topic, administering Baytril/antibiotic has been discussed. Regards Whirlyhen.

Hi Cammochick, sorry to read about your Pekin, if she survives tonight you can try the "B shotgun" it’s a high dose of Vitamin B around 3 times the dose rate. Let us know if she makes it through the night.

Thanks
P.A

Hi Cammochick, sorry that your Pekin didn't make it. Baytril is only available through a Vet, and can be supplied in large doses. Vitamin B is usually available from large pet shops or online. For a "B Shotgun" you triple the dose rate.

Thanks
P.A

So sorry your little pekin passed....

Tylan 200 is another very effective drug for respiratory type illess(mycoplasma specific bacteria is sometimes 2ndary to the initial illness)
Sounds like she had some as the closed eye is usually a good sign.
You can only get it from a vet and as it is not actually a drug for poultry it can sometimes be hard to get from your vet...Mine will give it to me.

a drug you can get over the counter for illness such as respiratory, Enteritis and scours is OXYMAV B, most pet supplies sell it, it is a broard spectrum AB for avian species, other companies also make similar such as Avicycline etc....pet shops carry it.
( this is not as effective if the resp illness is well set in, so keep your eyes peeled)

When treating your flock for suspected cocci, remove grain from their diet
put them on layer pellts and keep them on the medicated water for a full week.

The reason for removing the grain is the cocci actually feeds off protein in the gut so can aid in the spread.

Dont mix the meds though...if you suspect cocci, it may help to treat your flock, keep a close eye on them and if you notice similar signs with the eye closed...remove the bird.

replace the bedding once your flock is treated.

Hope this helps

Heidi
