This is unbelievable ...

My father knocked down a nest in my yard last Sunday while he was trimming bushes, and just to see what would happen I popped the 5 little eggs into the incubator. It runs hot so I propped the lid open and crossed my fingers ...

After failing dismally to hatch chicken eggs, I just woke up to find a tiny little something rolling around inside the incubator! At least two of the remaining eggs look like they also have live babies in them. Trouble is, I now have a baby I-don't-know-what that's about the size of my thumbnail and will need feeding soon. Worst case scenario is it's a sparrow, but there is a pair of blood finches here as well, and I really would like the babies to survive in case it was a finch nest that was knocked down. The nest was just a loosely woven collection of grass stalks - no feathers or anything else in it.

Does anyone have any experience with hand raising finches (I'm going to be optimistic and assume that's what they are)? I've raised parrots from budgies upwards, but never from an egg and never anything a tiny as this. I'm just grateful I've got 24 hours to sort something out, either to raise them myself or find an experienced carer.

Of course, my camera has chosen this moment to stop working :x

Rebecca

It was hard to tell what shape the nest was - it was so loosely woven that it didn't hold its shape after it was knocked down, and by the time I saw it my father had been rummaging around in it pulling the eggs out. The silkies ate it when it was dropped on the ground. It looked like it might have had a (very badly made) roof, but I can't be sure. I believe sparrows tend to put all sorts of junk in their nests ...?

If you get a picture of one of them, i will be able to tell you if they are finches or not, as for feeding them there is a product you can buy which i forget the exact name of (sorry) but it comes in a crumbly powder form and you just add water then spoon or syringe feed it to them...
In some exceptional cases i have crumbles up "scotch finger" biscuits then added milk and i have fed them this

hope this helps, ill try and find the name of the food i mentioned

It's all under control. :-D I found a carer who regularly takes in birds and seems very confident about raising them. As I was loading the incubator into the car this morning a second baby hatched right in front of me. :P The carer is quite sure they're not sparrows because of their size - they really are tiny. I guess we'll know for sure if they survive long enough to feather up.

Hi Rebecca,
I think the product Peter16 was referring to was Kaytee Hand Raising Formula. We always keep a container of that and Egg and Biscuit on hand for emergencies of the feathered kind. It works really well.
Cheers

Sadly, the babies didn't make it, so I'll never know what they really were. They were just too tiny - she got a couple of feeds into them but they eventually aspirated and their little lungs couldn't take it. I think she was using one of the Wombaroo formulas - I'll keep the Kaytee formula in mind for next time. Lots of nests around right now, and lots of wind too ... the next time might not be too far away!
