Hi,

I had a horrible experience yesterday with our new female king parrot, Dawn. I decided to let them out for a fly as they are kept inside at the moment until they get used to us (and then until it warms up outside again).

I thought the lounge room curtains were closed, and let her hop up on top of her cage in another room. I decided to look into the lounge room just to make sure everything else was okay and noticed the curtains partly open. I thought that I could beat her over there, but as I bolted to shut them she flew around the corner, spotted a big "open space" and went for it at full throttle! She hit the window head on and just dropped to the floor. I thought she was dead but then she started flopping around on the floor. I carefully picked her up and put her back in the cage, but she had trouble standing on the perch so I let her rest on the floor.

A while later she was back on the perch so I tried to give her a treat, but she couldn't open her beak properly to eat it - more panic as I thought she'd smashed something vital and was going to starve to death!

Luckily by last night she was happily cracking pellets & seeds again and seems back to her old self once more. That was a second chance I didn't think I was going to get, so I am so grateful to still have her.

I hate clipping parrots' wings as birds deserve to be able to fly - however if they are fully flighted it is then our responsibility to make sure they can fly in safety.

I just wanted to share this to maybe save someone else going through the same thing! I've always been aware of the danger of birds & glass, but I just wasn't careful enough this time.

Deb :-D

I had an argument with the avian vet (Ross Perry) who had a go at me for clipping my tiels wings. Apparently he was very conservative. I clipped his wings for the very reason that I didn't want him to fly into a window, I've attemped to rescue many lorikeets and doves with head injuries, rarely do they recover, I didn't want my tiel to have the same outcome.
I don't clip them enough to stop flight, just restrict it so he can still flutter safely to the ground without breaking his breastbone!

I've head-butted my fair share of windows and doors and I turned out alright. [smilie=new_silly.gif]

Hi Deb,
I read your story with interest as I often let our king parrots fly inside the house. We have a double sliding glass door on the back of the house that is never covered (it doesn't even have a flyscreen on the outside) and our birds have never flown into it. I cant explain why. We have had wild birds hit it from the outside a couple of times though. It would be a shame if you have to clip her wings but it may be the only way.
Cheers

I just make sure the loungeroom one is covered. All our others are okay because they have those plastic frames to divide them into smaller fake panes.

I had the little buggers out yesterday, and couldn't catch Dawn to put her away. I had put Anzac in the cage with the door shut but not locked. I had to go and pick my son up from school and when we got back - well, what a mess!! Anzac was out again and they had somehow pushed a whole heap of ironed clothes that I had on a lounge onto the floor about 2 metres away, had knocked a pictionary game over and were parading up and down on the lounge with the little pieces in their beaks (not choking size), and had spread their food from a tray all over the table and over the back of two chairs. What a party they must have had!

So I figure she is feeling better. ;)

I know what you mean about them partying Deb. A lot of the books in our house now have serated edges due to our pair partying when out for a fly. If we forget to put the fruit bowl away too you find a few bites out of each piece of fruit. Our male also has a thing about pulling all of the toothpicks out of the holder and just dropping them, He also loves to steal gold jewelry if you are careless enough to leave it out.
