My nana is giving me her old lorikeet approx. 9 years of age. I know her last one she had for 17 years... Just wondering how common it is that they live that long? [smilie=thanks.gif]

[smilie=welcome.gif] Mother_hen,

The average life span of a Loirkeet is 7-9 years, but they can live for up to and beyond 20 years in captivity depending on their diet and environment!

Hi Mother Hen,
I note you're in WA. Is your lorikeet a rainbow or a native purple-crowned?

If rainbows are only living 7-9 yrs then there's something seriously wrong with their diet. What's your nan been feeding it?

The stories of corellas living 100+ yrs are usually just that-stories.

Most die in their 20s-40s from malnutrition- too much sunflower seed, not enough greenfood.
Again it would be interesting to know what his/her diet has been so far.

If you would like more info please ask.

But most importantly- enjoy them!! :-D

She's rainbow she is 9 this year :)
The corella Im not sure of diet so far will ask nan more about it when he gets dropped off.
Lori has had a very mixed diet veggies, fruits and the lori powder that nan bought for her.
She is a very healthy bird, Jackson is very healthy but while granddad has had Jackson, granddad has sort of stopped paying attention to him so he will need some TLC.
Will keep you posted on his life here :)
Any ideas of what to feed him in what moderation?
I have never owned a corella before.

The trick with corellas, sulphurs and galahs is to limit the sunflower seed and nuts and maximize the variety of vegies and leafy greens they are fed. Any greens such as beans and peas of any sort, some corn, chillies & capsicums, spinach, celery, dandelions, milk thistle, seeding grasses are all great.
Fresh branches from any native trees- they will chew the bark, leaves, flowers, nuts.

Spoilt birds are usually sunflower seed junkies who are used to eating biscuits, chips, chocolate, coffee, alcohol.... etc. In other words an abominable diet for any bird. It can be a challenge converting these birds onto a more suitable diet.

Parrot pellets can also be used to replace the seed part of the diet but again you have to teach the bird to eat them. This can be a battle of wills.

In general if you can avoid foods high in fat, sugar and salt then you will be on the right track. The only fresh foods to avoid are avocados, onions and rhubarb.
