Because they are not seed-eaters, they are primarily nectar/pollen eaters, who occasionally eat insects and occasionally eat seeds.

Their stomach is very thin walled so they can have problems grinding up and digesting seed.

The other issue is the quality of some of the seed bells. Some are bound by gelatin but others are made with PVA glue- not exactly what I would want my bird to be eating.

The final issue is the composition of seed in these bells. Sunflower and safflower seeds are extremely high in fat (oil) content and not appropriate for lorikeets, even though they do love them.

There are much better things to give them- fruits, vegies and branches with leaves, flowers, and bark to chew on etc.

What are the red lorrys like as pets? I can get a young male bird about 4 months old but not sure if they turn into biters as they age?
