Hi, I think my Indian Ringnecks are going to have babies and was wondering how eazy it is to hand raise birds. What time should I take them out of the cage? I don't think I can feed them like every hour because I will be at school from 8-4. Also where can you get a hand raising kit thingy if you can get them.

G'day maybeamac,

Handraising birds is very tricky at first. If anything I would reccomend letting the parents raise the chicks until they start to develop pin feathers which is around 3-4 weeks. So once you get the hang of that then you could probably start handraising at earlier ages. Then you can pull them. Raising chicks from a day old is bloody hard work.

I've raised a wide range of birds from day old, few weeks to fully fledged birds. Including lorikeets, owls, soft bills such as kingfishers, kookaburra's, red wattlebirds, noisy friarbirds and welcome swallows, even red-browed finches. We have also raised precocial birds as well, which are relatively easy susch as stone curlews, stilts, plovers and the good old chicken.

Anyway, handrasing once you get the hang of it is relatively easy and you don't have to do it at every hour. There are two methods of handraising psittacines (Cockatoos/Parrots/Lorikeets), crop feeding and spoon feeding. Crop feeding is where you have a needle like implement attached to a syringe and basically the food gets placed straight into the birds crop. This can be tricky and dangerous if you do not know what you are doing. For beginner's I would recomend spoon feeding. Spoon feeding is where you have a modified funnel-shaped spoon and the food gets placed into the birds beak.

You can purchase handraising equipment and rearing mixes from birdshops.

If you want more information, I'll pm you my details and I can tell you more about it or you can contact :

Pretty much, they should start laying soon. At work our Indian Ringnecks already have young and eggs. One pair has 6 chicks and another pair has 6 eggs.

Fingers crossed that your birds aren't infertile. We have had one or two duds in the colony.

it's normal for them to mate every day. It is recomended to seperate the 2 pairs or the hens will be very aggressive to each other and possibly not them incubate.
