My daughters budgies have started laying. She originally had 4 breeding boxes occupied but 2 of the boxes have had their eggs eaten. Why would this happen? Is it another female coming and trying to take over the box?

if it becomes a constant problem i might have to spend a few hours watching in the hope i catch the culprite. Im hoping the 2 nests we have left stay intact.

G'day Cheryl,

Do you have woodshavings in your boxes and do you provide browse for your budgies? Shellgrit as well?

As some of these guys have already pointed out, if you do have a budgie that is going around and breaking eggs or even killing chicks, I would identify it and remove it from your flock. I have had that problem a few times.

I'm breeding Bush Budgies at the moment. I already have 2 chicks out of the nest.

Jax.

well we are still having the problem. 3 chicks were hatched and got to about 3weeks old and were killed. We got some more breeding boxes and some extra females (we had significantly more males than females) and all seemed well. One hen laid again and no eggs were eaten. 2 chicks hatched and they got to about 2 weeks old. One other hen started giving the mother trouble so i caught her and put her in a smaller cage and i thought we had solved the problem (that was this morning). we went out for the day and when we got home a different hen was covered in blood and the chicks were killed again. Now we have her "in jail" too. Could I have just been unlucky and ended up with 2 rogue budgies or could there be something else causing aggression? They have shell grit, and my kids pick them grass seeds and they have good quality seed as well. We have about twice as many breeding boxes as female budgies and had one extra female than males. I do not think we are over stocked (the aviary is 2.2mt X 1.6mt X 1.8mt and we have 9 budgies). My 8yr old is devistated so i let her pick out one pair and we have put them in their own smaller aviary with a breeding box.
