I'm planning on getting some diamond doves or finches for a small avairy, one of those aluminium ones, 3 enclosed sides and sloping roof. It would be about 1m x 1m x 1.8m high.
What do I need for nests, nesting material, perches etc.

I live in a very cold area, should I cover the front of the avairy at night?

thanks

We have budgies and at night we drop down a canvas cover over the front to stop owls and the cold wind. Works really well.

Like Stuart said, Canary nest pens for the doves, the finches will prefer enclosed nests, most pet shops sell them, little barrel type things made from wicker, or even small nesting boxes work.
such as:

or
http://www.redbirdproducts.com/products ... 1.80ea.JPG

I have had success with both.
For nesting material, any small flexible twigs, buy a pack of nesting feathers from the pet shop, and coconut fibres work really well. Expensive to buy, or if your feeling adventurous, most indoor pot plants at shopping centers use this stuff around the base of the plant, I used to go and grab just a handful of that :)

thanks for everybody's advice. It has put me in the right direction.

Not sure how I'm going to cover and de-cover the front as the roof overhangs at the front a bit. Im sure I will think of something.

If the roof covers the entire length of the avairy and 3 sides are enclosed (im assuming there is a section at the from half with mesh?) then you should not have to put a cover on it, up the back should be free from rain and wind.

The front of the cage/aviary is all mesh, not half and half.

It does concern me as I bought 2 diamonds doves awhile ago, they just sat in the corner when I put them in the aviary. I had a very frosty morning the next day and the birds were dead. I just thought it was the frost or maybe fright and stress.? I thought they were a tough bird.

I will take a pic of the aviary tonite and show you.

thanks

I bought an aviary like that and found it was difficult to enter without the risk of losing a bird or two. I got my hubby to make a flight area with a colourbond roof. It gets cold here and I havent lost any birds yet for that reason. I live near Toowoomba and it has been as low as 5c at night.
Oh and good luck with you birds.

Cheers Val
