Golden Mantle Rosellas
Could some one please tell me why a male bird kills his girl friend. The male has now had 2 female's
and has killed both of them.

Golden Mantle Rosellas Could some one please tell me why a male bird kills his girl friend. The male has now had 2 female's and has killed both of them.

Thats terrible I wonder if the male is a natural born killer? can you get rid of him and buy a new pair? |

Males of several species of parrots can become aggressive to their mates during the breeding season. There are usually problems if the pairs are not fully compatible or if the aviary is too small and the hen has nowhere to escape. Some hand-reared cocks in particular can be the worst offenders. Your best bet is to buy young birds so that they can mature together and thus are more likely to bond. They will also adapt to your set up and are more likely to breed successfully. Buying "breeding pairs" is good in theory but in many instances there are problems with these birds which is why the seller is disposing them. Also I know of several instances where genuine breeding pairs have failed to breed once sold because they haven't liked their new accommodation. My advice would be to buy healthy, young, sexed and unrelated birds and be patient. Wait for them to mature feed them well and hopefully success will follow. Good luck whatever you decide to do.
