this is probably a silly question  , but, how long roughly can it take for an egg to pip?

One off my pekin eggs started to pip this morning (was a little x type crack) and just went and had a peek now, there is a tiny triangle shapped piece of shell thats just raise a little :)

I'm a little nervous as this is our first plained hatch.. :-?

And so it begins :-D

Yer they can take a day to hatch.
Sometimes we give the australorp chicks a gentle hand out because they are so big and struggle to get out at times :)

Hi Kam31, Can take up to 24 hours depending on Temp & Humidity. Is it under a hen or bator?

Thanks

Hi Pa

I have a dozen split between 2 broodie hens.. I've not long been out to have a look, the broodies where off having a feed so i decided to investigate a little, (didn't touch the pipping egg) but carfully stuck my head in the nest box and listerned to the eggs  (am very anxious) i heard tiny tapping sounds and peeps from 4 in one nest and 2 in the other which is good, when we candled them on day 7 thats exactly how many we saw living :-D, tomorrow will be day 20. I've been reading that bantams are in the air sack and pipping shell on day 19 (today) and normally hatch around day 20.. 8) So far so good.. :-D

Pekin's especially can take 24hours or a little longer. I've hatched many different breeds, Pekins are the longest from pipping to hatch. Isa are fastest along with Leghorn. Last lot of Pekins took an average of 18 hours, I would not disturb them, would leave them be. BTW: the ones I hatch at home always hatch when I am at work, the little buggers wait till I'm gone, I'm sure!
