Hi guys... do you think this is a good coop to get for my back yard for 3 Rhode Island red chickens..? Is 3 the maximum I could have in here or is it big enough to add more in the future?

The measurements are W 75CM L 160CM H 103cm

Thanks chicken4.gif

NO!

RIR's are Big, Big chooks and there is no way that coop is big enough for them.

I have that exact coop as a quarantine coop for 1chook & I housed 1 Speckled Sussex in it & after half a day she had pooed ll the green grass availability that I had to keep moving it, twice a day. And that is just with one chook.

It has a crappy set out & there is no good position for food & water.

That coop is only worth for chickens to go into & lay their eggs and the hen house hasn't got a good roosting area either.

Make your own. There is lot if really good ideas on this site from members who have used recycled materials.

Sorry to be a bad news bear, but if you love your chickens, housing more than 1 chicken in that pen wouldn't be ideal.

I agree make your own it will work out cheaper and you can have the size you want and need. Also make sure you build it bigger than you want for the 3 hens as no doubt you will end up with double that as we all have

Oh yes, that's the spirit. They don't need the ritz but I have heard that .5m2 per chook is the minimum space per chook as a general rule of thumb.

Have a look at my eBay coop extension thread in the housing area http://www.australianpoultryforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=43&t=16809 - then you'll see how small these coops are. Way too small for 3 standard (large) chooks.

I love building my own chook houses. I made one that's 1200 x 1200 with a nest box on the side. I house 4 silkies in the nest boxes, 2 Plymouth rocks, 2 Australorps and two rosecomb crosses in there at the moment. I made a two level roost and the two Rosecombs roost on the top and the 4 big birdies on the bottom roost. I also made the chook pen with the roof. I just have to paint it (hubby's advice) and put the wire on.

I really enjoyed my little project. Next project is to make a chook house along the side wall to house more chooks to replace the ebay cheapie. :-D

Yep fully agree, far too small for your intended RIRs.

What location are you frankie2?

There are some nicely carpenter built ones on Gumtree and eBay.
