eggs in the incubator

I am going to leave those two in the incubator and check after Sunday which is hatch day for my silkie/sussex crosses.

Spots in eggs can be a number of things. One of them is a blood spot.

"Where do Blood Spots Come From?
When a new egg is ready to be made, a mature yolk is released from it's follicle in the ovary. Usually, the follicle bursts along a line that contains few, if any blood vessels (called the stigma). Sometimes it doesn't tear exactly along this stigma and a tiny blood vessel will get torn when the egg is being released.. The blood that escapes ends up on the egg. It is harmless."

That site was talking about duck eggs, but the principle is the same.
I have heard others say that an egg with a blood spot rarely, if ever hatches. That's been my experience.

Mind you, your spot might be something else. Hope you get a chick :-D

Well, I am chuffed. My first egg hatched in the incubator today. One of my silkie eggs. The brown sussex egg has pipped and is due any hour. The other silkie and 3 silkie/sussex crosses are due Sunday morning. These were my test eggs to see if I had it right with my incubator.

I put the eggs in a chinese takeaway container as I have set other eggs that need to turn and I have an auto turner. It seems to be working. It stops the eggs from turning in the last 3 to 4 days of hatching.

I have upped the humidity even though I have set other eggs. Hoping it will not affect them too much. After Sunday I will re set the humidity back down to 60%. With this weather though don't think it really matters as the humidity outside is 85% today.

average humidity is important, if egs have had high early, run them a bit low in the middle to balance out-----cheers pam

That's what I've done. The ones that spent most of week one at around 70-80% (and higher), have been sitting in 48% humidity since.

I candled them earlier this morning and the air sacs look good.

In fact, of the eight that I set, I only threw two away and that was after the first week. The other six seem ok still.

2 hatched chicks now. :-D

1 silkie and 1 sussex. :-D

They had been under a pekin hen but she got upset and left the nest and didn't go back top it for an hour so I took the 2 little eggs and put them in the incubator with the silkie/sussex crosses that I had put in the chinese takeaway container to stop the turning. :-?

When I put them in the incubator neither had pipped but one was chirping at me (the silkie) from within the egg, which hatched to next day. The sussex hatch at 1.30am this morning. A little weak to begin with but appears to be getting stronger by the hour.

The other eggs all look good when I candled them when I stopped turning them and put them in the chinese takeaway container. So looking forward to Sunday :-?
