Just a word of caution on hay or straw. Make sure they are not moldy.

On wood shavings, make sure they are not so fine and composed mostly of woodchips that the chicks will eat and choke. In addition, some shavings might also have moldy growths. Please choose meticulously.

On rice hulls, it can be used, but aside from attracting mice, can make your area dusty depending on the kind of rice hulls you get.

Some uses shredded paper. Some plain whole paper.

I have used all of them. :-D

Would it only be moldy if it was damp or wet?

Nope, it will be the whole shebang of microorgs! Just get the clean and dry ones. Again be meticulous.

Thanks.

Hello, Poultry Doc,

Do mould spores multiplying in wet and damp hay and straw result in respiratory infections, fungal infections and digestive tract infections in poultry,as mould spores would affect humans exposed in this manner?

So would it be in the best interest of of your poultry not to use wet, damp, mouldy hay and straw especially during winter time???

I hope that I am making some sense?

You don't use wet, damp or mouldy "anything", be it feed or bedding, around your poultry at ANY time, if you value thier health and well being.

Yes PP, your question is very sensible and yes, moldy hay/straw could lead to different disease conditions similar to humans getting exposed to molds and other microrganisms like bacteria and protozoa which can also use the wet litter as growing media. I have used a lot of straw and it is a good litter material, just find the dry clean ones. I also use bordeux mixture to control molds and fungi in case of questionable litter material source.

Thanks.

Thank you, Oaklands and Poultry Doc,

Animals depend on their owners for fresh food and water, appropriate shelter and safety from predators. Poor care and management can lead to serious and even fatal health problems.

I would not feed any of my birds anything mouldy, as I would not eat anything mouldy (except for blue vein cheese, don't worry I don't feed my chooks blue vein cheese) and I muck out their coop regularly so it is dry and clean for them in winter. I always think how I would feel in a wet, damp place...

Is Bordeux mixture the copper sulfate and lime fungicide that is used in vineyards and is it safe for litter for poultry?

Sorry for asking all these questions.

Petite Poulet
