Can I ask please how long is too long for a hen to be off her egg while she is brooding a large number of egg?

It varies in my experience, some quickly jump off sqarking and flapping, get a quick drink, peck madly at the food then run back taking only minutes, others seem to take their time wandering around for tid bits. Eggs don't loose core temperature really quickly though. I have seen some hens off for 10 minutes wandering around. What type of hen is it and how many eggs does she have to cover?

Eggcellent question, I've been wondering this myself and just hadn't got around to asking.

a hen can easily be off the eggs for half an hour and not cause a problem to the hatch. the older the embryos get, further into the incubation, the longer they can survive without a heat source...

Good to know, thanks kwinagi, I have a Silkie sitting on some eggs I bought but she likes to take a wander every now and then.

Great result which also means your hen is getting off for the right amount of time too! :-D

I had a broody hen that was accidently locked out of her nest on day 8, she was off them for about 4 hours and by the time I got home from work and found what had happened, the eggs were cold. They all hatched :)
My broodies usually take a 10-15 minute break, and i trust they know what they are doing. So far I have had excellent hatches with them!

Funny how resilient they are and what the eggs can tolerate you would think the chicks would die after the egg was cold
