Can someone suggest how I can fatten up my little silkie chick? She's only about 5 - 6 weeks old but she seems really scrawny, especially compared to her much larger brother. Worming is already on the agenda. They've got a constant supply of grow mash, but I don't know what else I could give them. I can't put them out on the lawn during the day yet as my tractor cage is broken, so they're stuck in the brooder for a while. She doesn't have diarrhoea and she seems bright and active enough, I'd just like to not be able to feel her ribs.

Hi Rebecca,

Gee mate, at that age i'm not sure that i'd be giving the chick anything other than it's normal chick starter ration/crumble and let them have a green pick at the grass.
I've given scrawney pullets over 10 weeks of age, cat food at times to boost their protein intake but never as young as 5 weeks.

I would have suggested wormimg but as you say you've done this?....so i really can't give you any other advice but i'm sure other members will :-D

Could even be a genetic trait :-?

Cheers n chooks

Darren

Hi Elfael, at 5 weeks they should still only be on Chick Starter, you can start to offer cracked grain mixed with the starter from 6-7 weeks, chicks need to build bone structure first then slowly adding body weight. Don't worry they will put weight on soon enough. At 8-10 week offer more diversity such as bread, greens, veg ect..

Thanks
P.A

Thank you everyone! I'll switch her back to starter mash tomorrow and stop fretting over her weight. Looking forward to the day I can let her out to join the ducks on the lawn. :-D

When she is a bit older, maybe the occasional hard-boiled egg mashed up would be good for her (and the others). They love it!

I have been feeding my little wobbly pullet this a couple of times a week, with a few drops of calcium supplement mixed in, to try to perk her up a bit. She is a bit older, though, about 3-4 months.

Deb :-D
