How many eggs of their own or similar size can a broody sit on successfully?

It seems logical to me, that she would have a higher chance of success with a very small number and higher chance of failure with a large number.

What are those numbers?

Below are my un-educated guesstimates...
1-6 eggs. "I can do this with my eyes shut"
7-10 "I'm gonna have a lot of kids"
11-14 "I can't cover all these"
15+ You're kidding!

i voted for 7-8 because i have always had success with that amount. and if it's large eggs under a bantam then i would go for about 3-4 eggs

I vote 8 - 10, although I had a pekin bantam who sat on 20 eggs and hatched 20 chicks once!

Pam why does the Jap Bantam have that 25% lethal recessive gene and is it impossible to breed that gene out?

the standard requires the bird to have short legs-the short leg gene is dominant--- birds that appear short legged , have one short gene one long--

-if a bird gets 2 short leg genes it is lethal(they are dead in the shell) and if 2 long they appear long legged and so do not meet the standard---
so to breed japanese to meet the standards you must retain the lethal gene

a long leg x a short leg mating will give you a 50/50 split in young
a short x a short will give you 50% short/25% long and 25% dis

cheers p

We set 10 per Broody Bantam (excluding Peafowl Eggs) and have little issues with hatch rate.

Thanks
