What Happens When The Power Goes Off?

I have

of an incubator, the problem is that the power often goes off where we are, often for an entire day

I have always wondered what happens when the power goes off regularly and eggs are in the incubator? Would you need a back up generator?

A backup gennie would be fine but it would require some switching to start it when the mains power goes out (which I imagine is possible) or it would require someone at home at the right time to turn it on (not always possible). The other thing you might investigate is a UPS - Uniterrupted Power Supply - such as the use for computers and other electrical devices. The UPS is basically a backup battery plugged between your device and the mains which kicks in when the power goes out. You would need to check how long the UPS will supply power for in the event of a blackout and what sort of power the incubator draws in comparison to the computer ie. wattage and if the UPS has the capacity to support the device.

, as I believe we are in a similar area it may be worth finding out if all of the areas are out. Power is often out at my place but in town and around on the other side of the highway are not. Have you a friend on the opposite side of main street to you? Could prevent a disaster from happening. I would always be ready to help if you need a hand (or a power socket. :lol:

The power flicked off two nights ago and hubby had taken the spare car battery to the garage to charge, so my handy (hanging on the curtain rail just inside the back door) fluro light couldnt be used. It's a bit sad when you have a permanent battery and light ready to go for such frequent occaisions. :-?

PP, I think you are the queen of internet research.

That Choice article is suggesting that units provide backup from 5-40 minutes to enable you to shut down your computer safely and save your work, you would probably need protection for significantly longer, hours maybe, which is going to massively boost the cost of the unit and your incubation setup.

, one day...Lots of factors to taken into consideration especially the problems with power supply in our area.

Love the idea of the UPS I am going to check it out more will help me heaps here as I loose power regularly

Would hot water bottles do in a pinch? I know you can regulate the temp but its better than died chicks

You would have to watch the thermometer all the time to make sure it was not too high or too low but I guess it could work, not for me though
