First time hatch

Hello
this will be my first time hatching some australorp eggs and I have one question that I seem to get a conflict answer on some other site. My question is at what age do the chicks no longer need to be heated in the brooder box and does it matter what the type of chicken is

Since I have only had 2 clutches hatched and raised by their mother hens, I would possibly say that chicks would need heat in the brooder box depending on the breed for 5-8 weeks or until the chicks are fully feathered.

I would agree with Petite Poulet, i leave mine in brooder till about 5 weeks and the into a larger pen (as long as they are feathered) with the brooder heater but still in the shed out of the cold, but that would depend on the weatheras well.

Ok thats ok I can keep them in for say 9 or 10 weeks so thank you for the help there

Most local councils let you keep cockerels until they are 12 weeks old.

Is it possible to get special permission to have 1 rooster in a suburb classed as residentual

Hey AliceTassie,

Different councils have different regulations. You should check what yours says. I'm allowed one rooster but if people complain there is a good chance he will have to go. Other areas aren't so lucky.

Highly unlikely if you are in an inner residential suburb, but check with your council, even in some country areas you need a permit and neighbour's consent.

Ok I will check I asked because I heard in some places you can by a breeders licence so you can then have a rooster

It would still be subject to your neighbour's approval and consent.
