hello to all

As I collect my eggs for incubation, I am often disappointed in the number of dirty eggs I get.....attempting to achieve a good incubation rate I set only "clean" eggs....that is those that are clean from the nest...not washed.

I keep the nests clean....and as far as the chooks go...it is usually a good "clean" collection rate...

But...here I am thinking more about my duck eggs.....they are usually good girls and lay their eggs in their 44 gallon drums which have beautiful indoor decoration (AKA clean straw etc)...but alas sometimes the eggs are still a bit dirty.....this becomes rather frustrating, especially when I have one particular girl who I am really keen to set as many of her eggs as possible...please share your stories with me....

How clean are your fertile eggs?

I have over 26 silkies and I too get a few dirty eggs and I have put it down to 1 or 2 of the hens that are pooping in the nest which for all the others does not happen so any eggs that I want to set that may have any poop on them I wipe over with a damp cloth and they look as good as new. I think some of the younger hens will have loose bowels when laying so they may not be able to help it but like you I like a clean nest and clean eggs
