Hi I have a problem which I hope you can help

My silky hen has finally hatched her eggs yesterday morning and when I checked on her this morning she was about 10 feet from the box with the new born chicks but in the box still was 2 chicks that looked wet still I have check again 10 mins ago and the 2 chicks are still in the box and mum and the other chicks are out side and she does not seem to care what can I do. Should I take them out of the box and take them to their mum? This has not happened before

[smilie=welcome.gif] Needy,

Seems like mum has rejected her late hatches.

I had a similar problem last year with a late hatch, with mum turfing the last chick (who also the runt) to hatch out of the nesting box, I had to keep popping him back under with his siblings under mum, but they were all still under mum for a day or so and they hadn't gone walk about.

Do you have a plan B, like a brooder? A box lined with non toxic wood shavings and appropriate lamp as a heat source will suffice. Make sure they have access to shallow clean water(so they don't drown) and chick crumble.

Hope that someone with more eggsperience can help you with what to do.

No I did not think of a plan b but now I am. I ended up taking them to their mum and they seemed ok late yesterday but this morning 1 of the 2 had died because he was very weak the other one is looking very good and has mixed in with the other chicks

Thank you for helping

Sorry to read that one of the chicks died :(

Maybe it was never meant to be, sometimes late hatches are weaker than the others that's why they hatch late.

Good luck with the other chick and the others.
