If the power goes off for 2 hours and my eggs have been running for 17 days do you think the eggs would have been damaged
Is it still probable they will hatch being only a few days away from the due day
I hope for the kids sake its yes they will be very upset

Andy,
In past experience 2 hours will have little or no impact on the eggs. Eggs are far more tolerant of cold than hot. The little chicks will still be generating their own heat, and with the temperatures at this time of year all should be ok.

For temperature to cause a delay in hatching it usually takes longer than 2 hours without a heat source.

Good Luck.

Rhode Red.

I have had power outages at 15 - 18 and 20 days ( 3 seperate hatches NOT the same one) and most have hatched well
my last hatch for that year (few years ago now) was with no power for the day before and during the hatch = 80% made it out just fine

good luck and do let us know how they go

# I own a generator now - got tired of no power and NO cuppa while the power was out!!

Do you need a regulator between the generator and the incubator? I went to hire one as we were having line works so no power for 2 days and the guy at the hire shop said it could damage the incubator without a regulator which was a separate thing he did not have???

I have never put my incubator on my generator, but would not be concerned. I think this bloke may think incubators are more complicated than they are. They are just a heating element, thermostat and fan, nothing to sensitive.

When you break it down like that yes they are quite simple so they should bo ok. I would love to hear from someone that has done it

I am not an expert on this but suspect my Rcom has some more delicate electronics involved with the temperature / humidity measuring and switching and display etc. so I always run it through a surge protector.
When the power goes off I run my old home made incubator on the generator because I know there is no sensitive gear in it.

You can loose power to an incubator for a short time without any adverse affects if the eggs are past the point of initial development so at say 15 days I have lost power for 5 hours on day 18 and all but 3 eggs hatched so the tolerance after the 15 days is high for temperature fluctuations

Hi we had the power go off for 7 days over a 3 week period for line work, hired a generator had no problems and the hire place were great, just told then the wattage and they gave me the one which would run for 8 hours. all turned out good.

I bought one that would match the power needs of my incubator as well as my water pump and if I disconnected both these I could use it to boil a jug then plug them back in
It is the wattage output you need to get right
But I do use a surge protector no matter where the power comes from

We get power outages all the time here = wind changes direction power goes out - sun comes up power goes out - sun goes down power goes out - sneeze too hard power goes out = well it seems that way sometimes
And since the earthquake and wind storms earlier this year we have had many scheduled outages to replace damaged poles etc
