Hey Everyone,

My Light Sussex hens had only been laying for about one month when one went clucky, I immediately sourced a dozen fertile eggs and put them under her. She destroyed three of them and accepted the other nine. Everything had been going fine, then the other hen went clucky four days ago and jumped on the nest with the first one, still no dramas until today when they started hatching out. One chick has made it out safe and sound but I've found two other chicks under the hen that first went clucky which seemingly made it out fine but got squashed. Now the second hen has the chick under her, plus the majority of the remaining eggs, and the first hen has a couple of eggs under her, one of which a chick is currently hatching out of. Should I take out the first hen as she seems to be the one squashing them or just let them work it out? This is obviously their first time hatching out chicks (as well as mine!) so I expected some issues, but when I found the two dead chicks it was just too hard to sit back and do nothing, so I've jumped on here looking for advice. Please reply soon guys before it's too late!

Cheers, Cam :)

Hi Cam

Yes you should move one of the hens, possibly the first one as you stated. The trouble with two hens on one nest is exactly what you are experiencing, squashed eggs/chicks. Make sure she can't get back to the nest though as she will try to return straight away.

Thought I was going [smilie=new_silly.gif] as I was sure that I had answered the question before somewhere else.

Sorry to read that the chicks got squashed. Separate the girls.

In hindsight, best always to separate broody hens into their own smaller accommodation like a rabbit hutch, lots of posts on this type of accommodation for broodies. There is always jealous and rivalry between the girls especially when they are broody and take over bids for clutches of eggs and chicks.

Best to be prepared with extra separate accommodation if you have a broody and want them to sit otherwise discourage the broodiness.

I posted this in the other topic, If they have say 10 or more chicks and they are all try to squeeze into 1 box the chicks loose out and I have found many flattened chicks the next morning. You have to separate them for sure
