Hello

I have a silkie sitting on 1 dozen eggs due to hatch in about 1 week I was wondering if I should take the chicks away and use a heated brooder being the cold weather is here or can the hen cope with such cold nights of 1 and 2 deg?

The best place for the chicks is with their mum I think I say leave them with her she will take care of them

I am basing my answer on experience.
PrimePoultry is right. Leave the babies with the mum and if its gets really cold I would bring them inside. Keep an eye on the hen see how she is coping with the low degrees. If she seems cold bring her inside.

Thanks primepoultry, she is a terrific mum so far and the chicks seem to handle the cold well

I put xtra hay in the roost and boxes I think thats helping with the warmth

Prime, have you ever tried chaff in the lay boxes? A friend suggested it but I think mine would eat it
