Being all new to incubating eggs I have my first question.

Would you set some eggs now in winter and if not why not?

Apart from the cold is there other reasons like disease risks and alike?

Thank you

wave.gif ChickenExpress and welcome2.gif ^ I see this is your first post

From beginning August to end Oct is the best time to set and hatch eggs, area dependant < just my opinion as so many hatch all year round then complain the ones hatched outside of the times mentioned here don’t grow properly

Hatching now means you need to make sure the chicks have adequate heating in no uncertain terms = imagine yourself sleeping outside without any heat in winter (and no thermal clothes either of course)

Many/most do not hatch thru July as it really is too cold = area dependant = if you are in an area that is within 2hrs drive of the snow fields or are in heavy frost areas = don’t hatch now – wait until mid to end August = reason = if the chicks stray too far away from the heat and their body temperature is good at that time and they fall asleep away from the heat source = they get cold = a cold chick (overnight) is usually a dead chick

of course if you are able to supply a secure heated environment for them = I see no reason not to give it a go

Hi
One thing why not hatch eggs in Summer?
I am breeding Lavender Pekins in the spring and in need of advice ( having never bred a certain breed before). I am in a bit of a delemma about whether or not to use a incubator + brooder box or a broody hen. Any ideas?

It all depends where you are and what you are breeding bantams are OK summer but the large breeds won't grow as big as eggs set from now till late Sept.
also if you have hot humid wether the chicks can go down with Cocci very quick unless you are on the ball.
the Broody or incubator is a personal choice if you have the breeds that go broody regular and are good mothers then that is a good option if you have heavy breeds that are clumsy or non broody breeds then an incubator and brooder is a good option.

Hi
Look at my signature all my chooks are there. Which ones would be the best mums? How do I tell if a chick has Cocci?
Sorry I'm taking over this thread [smilie=threadjacked.gif]
I will start a new thread :-D
Thanks

any of the silky's and pekins are good mums and sitters you may get an occasional bad one but not the norm.
If you ever get Cocci you will know they get lethargic and fluffed up and quite often have blood in their poop.
