latest update is 7 out - 6 Marans and one oddbod. My daughter has feather sexed them , and she does have a reasonable strike rate on this, and her opinion is 6 male Marans. Not what I wanted to hear. We'll see just how correct she is for this breed. Won't have to wait long from what I've read. And of course the odd one out is thought to be female. :-?

7 that's great! Well done [smilie=a_goodjobson.gif]

So that's interesting about the sexing.

Can you tell us how she sexes them?

I'm always wanting to learn more about sexing chicks without having to use the vent method.

Is it via the usual way?, I.e.:2 layers of wing feathers is girls & 1 for boys?, or does she have some other way?

Yes pics of the different wings would be great, but also of the whole birds would be good too. :-D

Took me a while to work out how to upload pics.

I had to download the "Gimp" program off the net to resize the pics. Let me know if you need help with that.

Cheers

She sexes them by the pin feathers or something like that, only works for the first day or two apparently.
The final assessment is 6 male and 2 female for the Marans...we'll see.

Some pics ( I hope)

This information on sexing Marans chicks is taken from the Marans of America Club

As for the chicks of these two varieties, they are very dissimilar in their down colour. At birth, the Brown-Red chicks have a largely black down, The sex distinction between Wheaten cockerels and pullets is possible from the plumage appearance, as the pullets have a wheaten color with a very light underside, and the cockerels are blackish with an underside which is red, sometimes some red spots on the breast.

So Wheaten chicks are easily sexed from the age of 2 to 3 weeks, as the first wing feathers on the pullet are wheaten, and on the cockerel they are black.

That's fantastic news that you ended up with 8 out of the 12 th_clap.gif

Can you post any pics of the pin feathers and the difference between the two?

Your insight (& your daughters) into sexing this breed would be wonderful and very helpful to a lot of members of the site.

Although we do understand it can never be 100% relied upon, it at least would give others a guide when they hatch out their own :-D

Again congrats on a good hatch rate. You're obviously getting better at it and fine tuning the craft of incubating [smilie=a_goodjobson.gif]

I tried to take some pictures but my daughter informs me its a bit late as its best at 1 day old. She has given me a Youtube link and says go to 3:30min mark
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8zbkkkn_PxE.
She still can't decide if we have 2 or 3 hens :-?

I'm happy with 8 out of 12 ( or is it 11) . $60 well spent. Might even take a chance on some being posted next time.

Oh yes I have used the commercial chicken method on my commercial chickens when they hatched out last year and got it 100% right, but I thought there must have been a different way for the Marans.

If I use the commercial sexing way with my 3 new one I think I have 3 roosters! hide: Bummer!

But I'm hoping that is so not the case! Two have exactly the same plumage and the other one is different so I'm hoping I have at least 1 female.

Keeping my fingers, toes & eyeballs crossed for at least one female out of this lot.
