I set 8 French Wheaton eggs 22 days ago, 23 days if you count the first day as day one( it was late afternoon). Nothing seems to be happening, no chirping sounds inside the eggs. The chook has not been of the nest for 4 days now. I am wondering if that hot day when it reached 42 c has cooked the eggs.
Is it possible they still may hatch?

wave.gif 4Chicks,

I don't know much about hatching eggs but how sure are you of their furtility? I know you can't be 100% sure but maybe they are just not furtile? You could leave them for another day or two, it probably won't hurt. I just wouldn't leave them too long under a broody hen. I'm not sure how to advise you on the heat though. Hopefully somoene else can give you more advice and I hope to hear that there will be some late hatches! gluck.gif

On advice from others I start the day count the day after I set them. So today is day 21. They are fertile as one accidently rolled out, got cold but I put it back, only to have it burst later. It had an embryo in it. Its just a wait and see with fingers crossed.
Hopefully in a day or two I will have good news, if not I will try again as I always have a broody Wyandotte or two sidesplit.gif

No nothing yet. Day 23 starts at midday, I will leave them till Monday then take away if nothing has happened.
I have read on a few sites eggs hatching at 24 days and the age of the eggs before setting may have some impact on days, plus on the coast we have had some cooler days & nights.
I don't hold out much hope even though the eggs feel heavy.

The biggest factor is the ambient temp if its low then they take longer if its high them shorter and yes as you say how old the eggs are. I always leave fertile eggs in for 23-24 days

I just checked under the hen again and all the eggs have the large end facing up. Is this a sign that the chooks knows something I don't?

Maybe you could try candling them? That might give you a better idea if they are duds or not.

Too late to candle them, if they are 1 end up then they are no good (either not fertile or addled) and you should take them away and dispose of them if they pop they will stink
