Hello again. Just wondering if it too hot to have Vanessa hatch some new babies? Last time, the advice we received about keeping her and the new babes warm was really helpful, but now I'm needing help with the exact opposite. Have spoken to Heritage Hatching (Richlands) and they said the eggs from yesterday wouldn't be any good because of the heat - upwards of 42 degrees! But that the eggs from this morning should be ok, so will wait til a bit later and pick some up. If tomorrow is really hot again, how will Ness cope and is it worthwhile doing this during summer??

Eggs laid in 42 deg are still ok and hens can and will sit in 40-45 deg without a problem. If they are kept in the right conditions and have fresh cool water then they will be fine. I have a friend in Qld and yesterday it was 45.7 at her place and she has 280 fowls and not 1 fowl was affected by the heat not 1 and she has both large and bantam especially wyandottes and no problems at all, because she has the right conditions and healthy fowls. People that loose fowl on hot days need to take a good hard look at themselves and the conditions they have their poor fowls in and not blame the hot day

I have 8 hens brooding and they are perfectly fine 1 or 2 hot days are not a big issue for them LooLoo

Ok, thanks heaps. Local breeder didn't have any fertilised eggs yesterday, so hopefully Ness will keep sitting and we'll grab some this Saturday....if he has any?! She hopped off about half an hour this morning, but after a drink, bath and running around like a crazy chook, got back on. Am really hoping that she will stay broody as she did such a good job last time. It's such a wonderful time for her and I to share, and the kids don't mind it either Fingers crossed xx

Unfertilised eggs from under our broody Australorp, from Saturday just gone. I was happy to simply dispose of them, until my Grandmother stirred my curiosity. "Why don't you just crack them open"?? Hmmm.... Soft boiled or poached?? do these photos require moderation?? So does this indicate that eggs were cooking under hen? I am a little confused..wondering as my partridge bantam is forever broody.

Confusion is a state of mind that only some experience on a constant basis. I am one of those people , so do not despair my friend, we'll get a clearer picture eventually I too am confused by those photos. cassnboys wrote: Hmmm.... Soft boiled or poached?? I honestly have no idea. Perhaps a full review of circumstances will help. We were away 2 days over Christmas, returning on the 27th. My Grandmother was tending the girls whilst we were gone and told us on return that Vanessa had been on the nest. Super excited was I!! Saturday the 28th was warm, but not as warm as the following Saturday the 4th. The first time I actually moved her to see how many she was sitting on, not wanting to disturb her, was Friday the 3rd. She was on roughly 7 eggs. I saw the remnant shell of an egg and thought I'd clear that out, along with an egg from one of the older girls (dimpled in texture and the shell of these is rather thin) As soon as I had done that, the smell of rotten egg was intense. The following day Saturday, was about 43 degrees here, but I began the quest for fertilised eggs from our local breeder. They said the ones from that day would be no good, which has been refuted by other forum members, but to come out on Sunday and grab some from that morning. We did so, but there were not 5 utility eggs available. Sunday, I decided to clear out the eggs from under Ness and transferred some fresh ones under her. It was then that my Grandma suggested I crack one open to see if they were ok......and then, the photos. Would be great to have some feedback on this! Especially as we plan to set her tomorrow...eggs withstanding!

In order to soft "boil" an egg like that the temp has to be OVER 65°C and no hen can and would raise an egg temp to anywhere near that, infact its very close to 38°C maximum under any hen. Did grandma play a trick on you with a softboiled egg?
