Hello, I an thinking of purchasing a Brinsea "Classroom package" (or at least I think that's what they call it) with the auto turn incubator, brooder, Ovascope and all the other bits I need to get going. The main attraction, at least for me, is the low power requirement. I intend to run the machines off our solar power system which gives us increased reliability over the mains power and means vastly lower operating costs. We won't be raising many chickens so the small size isn't a worry. The reviews I have read (mainly UK and USA) so far have been good but I would like some Australian experiences before I part with my money. Thanks. |

Thanks for the reply, Cackles. OS reviews are fine but I really would like to hear from someone that has had experience with a similar machine. There were a couple of complaints from the US that the incubators had not been "calibrated" and were running too hot (or was it too cold? I can't remember!) causing the hatch to fail. From what I can understand, there seem to be numerous reasons for eggs to fail to hatch. Even the totally natural, fully automatic feathered incubators (broody hens) get it wrong on occasions so there is a possibility for error/failure no matter what system you use. The things that I like are the low power consumption, auto egg rotation and the short time temperature reduction mimicking of the mother hen being off the eggs for a little while which is *supposed* to improve hatching rates. |

It's always easy to blame a machine for some sort of disaster. Usually they don't fight back or defend themselves and we have avoided having to blame ourselves for the blunder. I'll wait another few days before I place an order for the setup, I still have to organise housing for whatever chooks I manage to raise but my guess is that they will be indoors for probably a minimum of 5 or 6 weeks which gives me time to build some sort of "Alcatraz" to keep the chooks inside and the feral critters outside. |

So does this mean that an incubator will only work to it's best potential provided the temperature and humidity it is operating in are within certain limits? Does this mean, for instance, that a machine like the little Brinsea with it's low power consumption (and consequently lower mass heating ability) will only work in a nice, warm room whereas a higher-powered machine that has more heating ability would work just as well in a room that was less stable in temperature? It looks like I may have to re-think my decision, or at least re-read the Brinsea specifications for it's operating environment but I don't think that our mild climate would prove a problem to something that was well designed. This is starting to sound compli-blooming-cated! |
