Yes as clear as mud  I get what your saying and yes if we go by the "show" standard [aka APS] but for 99% of us we don't ;)

thats a bit like saying all grey geese are toulouse or all white ducks with orange bill and legs are pekins
if your not using a written standard,,then how do you make an assesment of bird and establish what breed it is? conf665

You cannot be serious to state that the show standard is the only way to make an assessment of bird and establish what breed it is {your words} come on! I have been around waterfowl longer than I care to remember and that is nonsense. Under your system and in your words you have an all white ducks with orange bill and legs are meets the type, stance ect.. of the show standard then it must be a "pure pekin" {quote you - if your not using a written standard,,then how do you make an assesment of bird and establish what breed it is? } without ever seeing the fowl or a picture it must be a "pure pekin" well thats wrong my friend as the "show standard" is just written words in a book it does not nor can it take into account genetics of the bird. The APS is the "show standards" not the bible on pure fowls especially the latest version.

If we apply the same to other show standards in other hobbies then if a budgie does not meet the ABS which no wild budgie ever would then the wild budgie is not a pure budgie or even a budgie at all.

No "show standard" can or will ever replace the good old visual and breeding history

P.s with the changes in the APS2 for the pekins are you taking a different approach with your pekins as your fowl no long meet the standards? are they still pure pekins though?

I read your post weston and though we think so much alike and our logic is stead fast and by the sounds you are old school like me. The young ones like the books written by others who read books written by other and so on. I like you no doubt go by the duck run of like experience and that's priceless

I clearly answered yours with detail. I've also asked you a question did you understand it? If you did you did not answer. The majority of poultry kept in "backyards" are never shown nor are they bred to the APS and their owners have no interest in doing so but I can assure you that many have pure quality you would love to have.

Here are some pics as promised.

The geese were unfortunately not as photogenic as I could have hoped. One thing I did notice about them is 2 lobes when viewed from the front. I will put the best front on pic I could.

This one is a side on.

I can answer also I have never gone to ANY breeder to buy stock and whipped out the APS book and the judging stick to mark it out of 100  I look for generational breeding and visual features not associated with type, weight ect.. as per the standard. Most of us are not interested in a $2 ribbon from a show.
