I have a female Muscovy who had sat on a clutch of eggs for 35 to 40 days and was unsuccessfull. All eggs were rotten, so I removed them, cleaned the box out and put clean straw into it 3 days ago. She seems miserable, she is sitting outside of the box just on some straw, she wont drink or eat unless I hand feed it to her, she wont get up and move around nor will she swim or enjoy the hose. She chased my 5 yr son out of the enclosure this morning and she has never done that before. There is a Pekin Drake in with her as they have always been together but she just ignores him. He keeps quacking at her as he seems concerned. I have bought another Muscovy duckling today and its 6 days old. Will she take to it if I give it to her and will she be happy again? I know I will need to keep the Drake out but will she look after the duckling or is she more likely to kill it?

All my females get a little cranky when I either collect all their eggs, or their clutch is unsuccessful. They fluff themselves up and make unimpressed chirps and quite often chase the other ducks away from them. It usually takes them a couple of days to get over it, but they all get a bit moody in the meantime.

As for the duckling, I'm not sure, I've never tried to introduce a duckling to a duck. You could try closely supervising and see how they go, or even first put the duckling in a cage near her, so she can't get to it, and just see how she reacts before letting it out. That's probably how I'd go about it. I'm sure others will have experience with that and be able to give more advice.

I think that is risky I would not try that if it where me you just don't know if she will kill it now or later

I put the duckling in with her for the last 2 nights on dusk as she went to bed. I stayed fro an hour to keep watch over her but she took to it immediately. It was lovely to see her take the baby under her wing. I checked on them every half an hour or so to be sure she wouldnt hurt it. She is so much better now. She is eating, drinking and swimming again and she is not just sitting there waiting to die anymore. The drake Pekin is driving me and my neighbours crazy with his loud quacking starting at 5 am every morning as he has been separated from his mate, so I have to go in and remove the duckling and let them out for the day while keeping the duckling inside. I'm considering either selling my Pekin drake or giving him to a good home away from close neighbours. He is soooo noisy all the time and I am worried he will get me a call from the council or something! I love him dearly but I'm not sure I can keep this up until the duckling is big.

Pekins are a noisier breed of duck but only now when breeding is taking place he is calling for a mate he should settle down after the duck breeding season is over
