I would bet it was the cat :x

I've only ever seen one cat in my yard (apart from mine which is supervised when out and is a 90% indoor cat and has learnt that he's not allowed to chase them), but that is always a possibility, though I would've thought the others would then be scared of my cat (which they're not) or for my partner to have heard something going on. But if it was a cat, I hope the owner it brought a dead duckling back to feels bad. The amount of things my parent's cat drags inside half dead is pretty terrible. That's a good reason my cat has never been allowed outside unsupervised/free roaming. Don't get me wrong, cats are awesome, but you can't deny they have a very strong hunting instinct.

The definition of cruelty = watch a cat with it's prey! Mind you I love cats, we have 4. Ours are inside with us at night and with bad weather and for the rest of the time they have a specially enclosed (large) cage in the backyard with their own lounge, scratching post and toys. Plus they get to watch the chooks and other wildlife from a safe distance! Any mouse that comes in the house is fair game though ;)

hehe yeah, the only things my cat is allowed to 'play with' are roaches and spiders, unless I get to them with a shoe first

It would be good if all cat owners where like you both then a lot less wildlife would be killed every day
