i find that no matter how many times you change the water, the next day, it is filthy again. So saying, we have a pen with about 3 ponds in it... the furtherest pond from where they all shelter during the day seems to have worked it out... the water is clear! well, brownish - ie, i can see the bottom of the pond. I have seen them using it, so i know that it does get used. perhaps only one or two use it, and the rest just for drinking from, so it has time to settle?

The answer then would be make your pond big enough!

A half dozen smaller ducklings take a week to dirty up a clam shell size pond. Is it possible to be able to scale that up for your birds? - if only we all had 10 acres!

Umm, Thinking fish tanks - algae likes sun. Any fish tank that sees the sun seems to grow algae about 10 times faster! ... if you are planning on making it a bit of a feature, you can try building a roof type covering over the top - you know, make it look like an old fashioned well. this stops the sun, and a lot of leaves falling in if it is under trees, as the leaves create dirty water too.

Have fun! :-D

Sorry for waffling...

HI all
I have 6 mallards. Wanting the pond to inground. I was thinking a bath tub if I put a big rock in at one end so they can get out. Do you think that would work?

baths are a great idea. I've got a couple of them as well as the clam shells.

The ONLY problem I've found with inground ponds, is when you are trying to clean it - you can't just tip it over to empty it.

I want a decent water pump to be able to siphon the water into barrels for my plants before I go in ground. then the water change isn't so much of a drama. :-D

Good luck

So do you sink the tub in the ground & then use a pump to empty it

I could use a plug so when I need to clean it I can just pull the plug.
