I have been in contact with the DEC about licensing. I was told that there is a review in process of the current licences, which at the moment, waterfowl come under Advanced Aviculture Licence. And exotics such as Mandarins, NZ Scaup, Egyptian geese etc. are under a Exotic Bird Licence/ Declared Species.
In future there will be a Waterfowl Keepers Licence, with different categories or classes, similar to a reptile licence. E.g. Class 1/ Category 1 , Class 2/ Category 2.... etc.
I'm guessing the new licensing of waterfowl maybe categorised by issues like, Status in the wild, Feeding procedures, amount of water/land in enclosure or aviary dependind on species, Risks of escapees?, Noise issues, social structures, enclosure design and requirements.

Havent heard of anyone with ruddies. although i'd like to find some.
maybe start a post purely about ruddy shelducks.
Hopefully some other keepers can start adding to this topic because i thought there might have been more interest. I'm preparing my enclosures whilst awaiting some cooler weather, before i can give a few species a diet flush of some proteins to bring them into breeding condition. I'm thinking my nz scaup will be first to nest this season as they are beginning to get a bit frisky and are continually inspecting the hollows and boxes. Although the Chestnut Teal seem to be doing the same. Hurry up rainy season, the season for ducks.

Hi Oz,

I have previously kept plumed whistlers, I was looking to expand but I ended up going backwards and now I only keep mandarin ducks. I am looking at getting 5 egyptian geese hopefully over the next week or two. In the future I would like to increase my collection to include natives. I work with them daily so I have a great knowledge of nesting and breeding behaviours.
Good luck for the breeding season, I hear the rain should finally come this week!

Matt

The rain did come for a few days, a very nice change. The Plumed whistlers were the first native species i kept, and they are still as interesting. Their cheerful whistles at feed time are like no other. The Water Whistlers are chatty too, but not as high pitched, but the Grassies are always the first to start.
My Hardheads are duckweed eating machines atm,and its only just starting to take off in the weed ponds.
Where are your Egyptians coming from Mrpeabody?
Do you know any waterfowl keepers who dont use the forum in w.a.? or Interstate?
