Hi, soon I will have my first ducklings and researching the duckling food best used from birth. I read its all about the protein and its got to be high. I was hoping you can tell me what is best and the brand name so I can get it before the ducklings come, I did try to find out but a msn search was very confusing but it did point out this forum

you will find many people use chick starter......whereas Laucke duck mash is also recommended for day old ducklings.....

I don't......as the ducklings will wet it anyway [smilie=a_rolling.gif]

ducklings like their older relatives are very messy be nature......so be prepared to be regularly changing their water and food bowls, and bedding

I use riverina duck mash and then switch them onto chicken layer mash once they're older. I was under the impression that at least medicated chick starter was bad for ducklings, I had a hard time finding chick starter that wasn't medicated so I found somewhere that had the duck mash. Can anyone confirm that the medicated chick feed is not good for ducks?

I also remember reading this somewhere...but my more recent searches on this and other forums yielded comments from various people saying that chick starter has been Ok in their experience.......maybe....it might be more that the ducklings do not need the "medication" in the chick starter (which I understand is for coccidiosis...which ducklings are not at risk of)

happy hatching

The medicated starter is perfectly fine for ducklings or any chicks at all its medicated to help with their immune system and that won't hurt any chick

Yes the med stick starter is actually good for them and NOT because its medicated but for the protein the medication has no benefit or negative to them so you can use BUT if you can get duckling starter feed that is much better because of the high protein
