Muscovy ducks are not "true" ducks....but they will cross with other duck breeds.....my understanding is that the offspring are infertile.....

Unfortunately, yes, any cross breeding of the muscovy to any other breed of duck results in what is called a mule, none of which are fertile.

Gosh! Now be prepared for the varied responses you shall get with this question!

As many of us have our preferred breeds, there will potentially be a large range of answers.

What do you want the ducks for? for egg laying, meat, ornamental aspect?

Personally...I have khaki campbells and cayugas......the campbells are great egg layers.....the cayugas not as great, but classed really as a dual purpose bird (i.e meat and eggs)...personally I keep them because I just love them, they are gorgeous, and I like to think I am maintaining a rare breed....but I love my campbells as well!

I have had muscovy girls; so much character! and a pair of indian runners (character, but mine were flighty)

And if I had more room and time...I would also like to keep blue swedish, saxony's and.......

Then you have to consider if you wish the ducks to go broody and sit on their own eggs?

I shall be interested to see the responses ;)

I agree with julie that choice is vast but I will recommend Indian runners as they have such character but yes they can be a little flighty when nervous

I have thought about your comment as above;;;;;so....do you want the mother ducks to brood and hatch their own ducklings?

If so...this will really narrow your options as many breeds do not make good brooders or mothers
