It may happen there are import syndicates and private breeders like PA that have irons in the fire as they say!

If we had open slather, then yes the possibilities would be numerous.
However, that is not how these things work.
Each species is assessed on a number of criteria including possible pest potential, risk of illegal trade etc etc. Then there are CITES issues.
In the end you end up with a very specific list of species, from a limited number of countries. Sometimes, the countries from which you are allowed to import ( "low-risk" countries-VARIES WITH THE DISEASE IN QUESTION) don't even have the species you want, or only have very low numbers themselves.
However, I'm sure those involved have done their homework, and are prepared for the inevitable setbacks that befall these sorts of ventures. And hopefully they will succeed.
We can only wish them the best of luck.

Sometimes it’s a case of putting the greater good before the hobbyists

i agree, but if the hobbiests are going to contribute to the greater good (breeding up rare sp.) then i believe that they should consider this also....

If they were really interested in the greater good we wouldn't allow live pigeon imports into Australia, nor a large number of the foodstuffs which we already produce in large numbers.

It's called the "Free Trade Agreement" !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Last time I saw a pair of Ruddy Ducks and a pair of Mute Swans, was at Auburn Japanese Gardens...that was years ago...and those birds are ageing unfortunately...Gawd they looked good too...
