Would you use the magpie calls in a cross with trout calls? I have 29 trouts and 44 magpies and would like to try to make something new in the call ducks

Whats the thoughts?

Those are both nice varieties. The magpie calls must be difficult to get right.
My guess is that the first generation crosses would be pretty much wild type ("mallard") in appearance. The recessive light phase from the trout calls would not be obviously apparent.
One dose of the incompletely dominant runner pattern might show traces of white markings. Similarly the dominant bib pattern might also only show traces because it is only clearly expressed on black. Black being recessive would be hidden.
Any other recessive genes such as white might appear if they are present in both parents.
I have considered a similar cross with fawn and white and trout runners but was put off by the number of culls that would be needed before fawn might be produced.

I don't have magpie calls but do like the colour pattern.
My understanding is that they are genetically black with the runner pattern and bib genes.
I have fawn and white runners which which have the runner pattern gene and know it to be quite variable and guess that would make magpie calls fairly variable in markings also.
Trout ducks with the addition of blue in either one or two doses are very nice looking in my view. The same gene in one dose should make blue magpies I think.

Oops I was wrong. I have not bred black ducks but should have remembered that black is actually a dominant gene.
Depending on whether the magpie calls have one or two doses of black either 50% or 100% of the progeny would be black. The same principle would apply to the expression of the white bib.
Black masks both the mallard series genes and the dark/light genes.
A variety of hidden recessives, including white and brown, might also appear.
The main problem would be the reduced runner pattern markings which would result from one dose of runner pattern genes.
