Could anyone give me some advice on how they manage different flocks of ducks?

Do you separate the ducks from the drakes at the end of the breeding season or leave them in their individual breeding pens or let them all run together after the breeding season has finished?

My trout runner drake attacks my white runner drake whenever I let both flocks out to roam the orchard together and swim in the pond.
So I have to let the flocks out on alternate days.

I have breeding pens set up where I keep them separated during the breeding season and was thinking at the end of the breeding season I may need to place all of the ducks together in my other large single pen (to give them a break) and leave the drakes in their individual breeding pens.

The breeding pens are side by side so the drakes would still be able to see each other and talk to each other through the wire.

Any advice would be most useful.

Thanks in advance,

Wayne Brown :?:

Hi Wayne, sorry for the delayed reply, we run "Trios" of Mallards, Black & Mountains, during the breeding season but when the Drakes finish moulting, we mix all birds together(of the same breed). You may find some pecking order but nothing serious.

Thanks

Thanks for the reply PA,

When do you find your drakes have finished moulting?

I was thinking of seperating the drakes into one run and the ducks into another run at the end of this month that way the drakes and ducks can be let out into the orchard on alternate days. The ducklings are all in the third run and are let out most days (except when the white indian runner drake is out).

My white indian runner drake will attack any of the smaller ducklings he can corner so having him out at the same time as them is out of the question.

I have finished breeding from my runners for this year and am sorting out the white runner ducklings to decide which are being kept and which are being sold in the next couple of weeks.

I'm keeping all of the trout runner ducklings until after they have finished their juvenile moult (probably the end of December)

Wayne

Hi Wayne, Generally our drakes (including Mandarins) finish moulting by the first week in December, but we do get the odd one who wants to be different. By the end of December (at the lattest) we have all Waterfowl in the Communal pens (all the same breed in each pen) mixing Drakes & Ducks. 6 weeks prior to the breeding season the drakes are individually repened, then at the end of 6 weeks we introduce the Ducks & the fun begins.

Note: The young Waterfowl are not introduced into the Communal pens.
Note: Keep a close eye on your drakes as some species take longer than others to wined down.

Thanks
