Bundy Jondy suggested porridge

Who said anything about dairy products and powered milk in the chooks porridge??? - Next it will be "sugar to taste!"
As to cheese, like porridge I would feed them both- strictly as occasional treats!
( All our pets absolutely adore cheese)

NO, feed your Girls just good old ordinary oatmeal- mixed, cooked and cooled- and served cold or perhaps warm if you are in a cold climate.
I choose to use the porridge as a vehicle to feed the Girls their garlic, as I know they love their porridge, and garlic is a natural antibiotic.
They love it! Both the porridge and garlic disappear within in minuets.,,

Now, as to my girls laying more eggs following been given porridge?
Well, true! porridge has no protein, and is a carbohydrate, with a low food value ratio-
but coincidently egg numbers are up?...................
However, porridge and egg laying increases are after all probably just an "Old wife's Tale"

Quote:

Milk powder is ok to use and a little brown sugar is no problem either. I have a sweat tooth may be my chooks do too  Good old recipe Bundy Jondy th_clap.gif

Would the wholemeal oats be better to use? I like the sounds of this and will give it a try

Hi,

Yes, wholemeal is equally as good for your girls,
However, note what has been said in previous posts regarding the food value, and increased
egg laying capabilities of porridge.

As a treat, porridge like any other food, is fine.
My Girls get all sorts of foods, from veges, fruits to the ocassional feed of crab and prawn shells,
but if you want the best eggs, they must have their essential foods=
laying mash, grain, and lotts of greens, and shell grit for good shells.

Good Luck.

Bundyjondy.

I was only thinking of the porridge as a twice weekly treat yes as they need all their other food.
Thank you

Hi Fellow Chook Lovers,

What I would be interested to know is;

Will avocados kill chooks as they kill horses and dogs? (cause heart problems)

I noted a mention in someone's post of avocados in their feed list??

We have avocado trees, but I have not feed them to the chooks just in case?
They adore custard apples, and mulberries from the tree that hangs over the girls run!!
The local fruit market is a source of fruit and vegies various for the girls lunch.

As to cheese-it is amazing how all domestic animals just adore cheese!
The odd tin of cat food is a good protein source too.

Cheers

Bundyjondy

Avocado's are toxic to all birds so you shouldn't let them eat it

My grandfather always used rolled oats through winter with his birds. He added garlic, chilli, comfrey with full cream milk be it powder or fresh to the mix.He poured boiling water over the oats and let sit till it was warm stirring occasionally. Then added chopped up fresh garlic, comfrey, chilli and milk.He never had sick birds through winter that I can recall. He had a special bowl for it and I remember when they were finished he would pick up all bowls and scrub them out with boiling hot soapy water ready for next time. This is only fed as a warming food first thing in the morning and as a supplement to there main diet.
