I want to paint my coop and would like to know if I should use acrylic paint or enamel paint?

G'day Inge, once the paint is dry it probably doesn't matter. Personally though I'd lean towards a water based paint, mainly because it's easier on your health, the fumes aren't as potent and all you need is water to clean up afterwards.
One thing I do each year ( if I remember ) is paint the inside of the pens with a lime/sulphur wash. This helps to deter parasites for a while.
Just add lime powder & sulphur powder to water and slap it on.
Another interesting preventative the old timers used was to start a small fire in the pen and throw sulphur powder onto the fire. This was done after the chooks left their pen, so during the day the burning sulphur would kill off most if not all of the parasites. By the time the chooks came back to roost the fire would be out, but enough sulphur fumes would be left to force the bugs off the chooks without affecting the birds.

I painted mine with high gloss water based sky blue not only does it look good but its easy to wash down and poop doesn't stick to it that well so easy to get it off and keep it looking good

I don't know, they're probably more interested in something dry & out of the wind.

I'm a bit late to this question, but could you use the Yates lime sulpher spray for the perches? I'm getting a metal shed, but will have wooden perches in and would like to keep the mites off the perches. We're waiting patiently here for the wind and rain to stop so we can start erecting the shed 52.gif

What you need to concentrate on is to close off the wood grain with paint so that the mites don't have a home to go to at daybreak, that includes all wood joints. Some people think that a metal perch would solve their mite problems, but I can tell you which material I would rather perch on when the temperature falls to freezing or below. Give me wood any day.

I prefer a water base since the chickens seem to peck at everything and I don't want them ingesting anything bad. A gloss paint will last longer than a flat.
