Is it ok to use old news paper in the bottom of the brooding cage, if they eat it will it hurt the chicks with the ink?

Should be okay, Gus. Shredded would be better, we put newspaper in our wormfarm without any obvious ill effects.

The only issue you will have is with just hatched chicks and their legs, splayed legs can eventuate when they are on newspaper as it is slippery and the chick is constantly fighting to keep its little new legs together, better to shred it so they can have something solid (ish) under foot for the first couple of weeks at least. Its easy to tear it up yourself if you want to use your old stuff up.

You could always mix it up with some sort of chaff (papers good for soaking up the wet stuff). Imagine how your vegies will appreciate all that good good shtuff.

Sure, I use sugar cane mulch in mine all the time (the one you get in the plastic wrap) I find it good as I can then tip it onto the gardens afterwards.

Probably should be changed once a week or if it becomes rain affected.
